Difference between Achilles tendonitis vs. tendonosis?
Tendonitis of the Achilles tendon is a common diagnosis among runners and endurance athletes where there is direct inflammation of the Achilles tendon where it inserts on the heel bone. The problem is the majority of them are not suffering from tendonitis but instead a non-inflammatory condition called tendonosis. There is a major difference between these two diagnosis’. Tendonitis is the inflammation of a tendon.
Tendonosis is the degeneration or breaking down of a tendon in the absence of inflammation. Yes, the pain is coming from the tissue break down NOT inflammation.
The distinction is important because the conditions are treated in two entirely different ways. The only thing the two treatments have in common is that a professional needs to normalize the tissues with Manual Adhesion Release® or Instrument Adhesion Release® in and around the ankle to make sure range of motion is normal. After that, the treatments differ quite drastically.
Treating tendinitis vs. treating tendonosis
With tendonitis we need to control the inflammation with medication, ice, compression, and rest. With tendonosis, we want to create more blood supply to that area of the tendon. This is done with very specific exercises, along with the application of heat and possibly a form of instrument assisted therapy referenced above, Instrument Adhesion Release®.
Long story short, you need to visit a chiropractic specialist at Prime Spine Associates to get the proper diagnosis so that you can get on the right track to rehabbing your injury.
