Are you experiencing Muscle Spasms?

If you’re over the age of 25, you most likely have encountered a muscle spasm. They’re not fun. And they’re a symptom and reaction to a much larger underlying problem.

So what’s a muscle spasm then?

When a muscle spasms, it’s simply contracting. Yes, it’s doing it rather violently, but simply put, its contracting.

Why is it doing this?

The most common reason is that the body is trying to protect itself.

When you get muscle spasms in your lower back, your body is trying to tell you to stay up straight and not bend forward. This is because when you stay upright, you put far less stress on the spine, more specifically, the intervertebral discs. When you have an injury to a disc, the muscles respond by contracting to keep you from making that injury worse.

What are some common reasons for muscle spasms?

  • Herniated Discs
  • Bulging Discs
  • Slipped Discs
  • Internal Disc Derrangment
  • Dehydration
  • Overuse
  • Protective Tension

Muscle spasms are usually related to a biomechanical problem caused by the accumulation of scar tissue. Scar tissue develops after the repetitive use of muscles, and changes the way your body moves. This puts the discs and spine under increased levels of compression, causing injury over time.

How can you get rid of muscle spasms?

First, don’t take medications to reduce the muscle spasms! If you do this, you’re simply disengaging the bodies ability to protect you from making your injury worse. The best thing you can do is keep that area of your body warm and respect the position it wants you to stay in, so it can heal itself.

As a medical provider, one of my biggest pet peeves is when a patient comes into our office for the first time and tells us that they saw another provider (primary physician, chiropractor, physical therapist) and was diagnosed with muscle spasms.

Muscle spasms aren’t a diagnosis. I repeat, MUSCLE SPASMS AREN’T A DIAGNOSIS!!!

At Zelasko Soft Tissue and Spine, we don’t treat muscle spasms in our office. We diagnose and treat the underlying problem that causes muscles to spasm. Call our Orchard Park chiropractors today at 716-677-5525 and make an appointment.
