Ankle injury and pain from jogging / exercising outdoors.

Rolling your ankle

The most popular form of ankle pain is due to a someone rolling their ankle.  This normally results in the stretching or tearing of small ligaments in the ankle that connect two adjacent bones giving the ankle its stability.

Typically the best thing to do in this scenario is to allow those ligaments to heal over 7 to 14 days, and then seek a manual therapist to help you regain your normal range of motion and stability.

There isn’t a single person on this earth that can sprain an ankle and not suffer from consequent restricted range of motion (which leads to other injuries down the road) or lack of stability.  Both types of problems need their perspective treatment to fix and you need to seek out what’s best for you.

This can include tendonitis of specific supporting musculature of the lower leg and ankle, as well as, tendonosis of the same tendons resulting in the vulnerability of one tearing a tendon if not treated properly.

Both of these types of injuries require a combination of specific manual therapy treatments and rehabilitative exercises.  Only, in this case we are typically using rehab exercises to generate blood flow to the specific tissue in an effort to help build that structure, as opposed to other types of exercises where the goal is tearing the muscle down so that it may build itself back up bigger and stronger.

Breaks / Fractures

There are an abundance of small bones in the ankle that all have their own responsibility in assuring you are able to walk and run normally.  Any type of traumatic injury or crushing can result in stress fractures, fractures, and broken bones.

If you are in severe pain whenever you put weight on that ankle, and you see bruising within 48 hours of the injury, I strongly recommend getting x-ray’s in order to rule out any type of fracture or damage.  It’s always better to be safe and than sorry.

If you’re suffering from ankle pain, schedule an appointment with one of our Elma chiropractors for an accurate diagnosis and treatment.
