We’ve all heard of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) before. We may even know someone who has had surgery to try and repair it.  But does this syndrome really call for surgery?  Not necessarily!

What does Carpal Tunnel Syndrome feel like?

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is pain, tingling, and numbness in the wrist, palm of the hand, thumb, 2nd, and 3rd fingers.  As a result, true CTS does not affect the pinky finger or the half of the ring finger that would touch the pinky finger.  If you feel any of the symptoms above in the palm side of the thumb, 2nd, or 3rd fingers of your hand, then you may be suffering from this common condition.

What causes CTS?

One cause of these symptoms is compression.  When joints in the wrist swell the median nerve will become pinched as it passes through the palm side of the wrist.  The median nerve innervates the parts of your hand discussed above.  Surgery works well at relieving this problem.

However, the same symptoms can be caused by compression or entrapment of the median nerve anywhere in the neck, shoulder, elbow, and/or forearm.  In these cases, surgery at the carpal tunnel will not fix the problem.

What can be done about my CTS?

The condition that’s causing you pain can be complicated. The nerve could be stuck at multiple places as it travels from your neck to your hand, as stated above. The good news is we have a specific system to identify all of these issues and the best and fastest treatments to fix them!
