Are you experiencing Hammer Toe?

Does your toe look like a hammer? All bent out of shape at the end?

Treatment and prognosis for this condition is mainly based on the time frame it’s been present.

The deformity of the proximal interphalangeal joint of the 2nd, 3rd or 4th toe is a contracture of the joint itself. This is most likely as a result of wearing poorly fitting shoes that are either too short or too narrow for your foot.

If you’re just noticing this, and if it’s caught early, then I would suggest skipping the high heels for awhile and wearing shoes with some room in the toes, to see if you can get the toe to return to normal.

If it’s been around for awhile (months to years), I would recommend calling a podiatrist and getting advice on what your options may be. In most cases, this condition isn’t caused by the accumulation of scar tissue in the foot, although it may contribute to it. When this is the case, often times you’ll be experiencing symptoms in the bottom of the foot or possibly across the ankle as well.
