ART® (Active Release Technique)

What is ART®?

Active Release Technique (ART®) used to be the most cutting edge soft tissue, movement based technique that treats muscle, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerve problems.  Headaches, neck pain, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just some of the many conditions that can be resolved permanently using ART®.  All of these conditions can often be resolved with ART® because they all share a similar cause- they are often a result of overused muscles.

How do muscles become “overused”? Isn’t using your muscles a good thing?

Using your muscles is a great thing, and as an Elma chiropractors we highly recommend regular exercise for improved body health as well as mental health. However, sometimes conditioning can lead your muscles to become overused.

Overused muscles (and other soft tissues) change in three important ways

  • Acute conditions (pulls, tears, collisions, etc.)
  • Accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma)
  • Not getting enough oxygen (hypoxia)

Each of these factors can cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue, that binds up and ties down tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker, tension on tendons causes’ tendonitis and/or tendonosis, and nerves can become entrapped. This can cause reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. If a nerve is entrapped you may also feel tingling or numbness in the muscle.

What is an ART® treatment like?

At Prime Spine Associates in Elma, every session we provide is actually a combination of a comprehensive examination and a treatment. Chiropractors Dr. Zelasko and Dr. McCrea use their hands to evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of your muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves, and once a precise diagnosis is obtained, abnormal tissues are treated by Dr. Zelasko and Dr. McCrea combining precisely directed tension with specific patient body movements.

For every individual client we procure a custom procedure to determine the best solution to your personal needs. There is nothing cookie-cutter about our approach.

ART® has been developed, refined, and patented by P. Michael Leahy, DC, CCSP. Dr. Leahy noticed that many of his patients’ symptoms could be felt by hand. By observing how muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves responded to different types of work, Dr. Leahy was able to consistently resolve over 90% of his patients’ problems. He now teaches and certifies health care providers all over the world to use ART®.
